As the climate crisis worsens, Europe has found itself in the grip of unprecedented heatwaves, with cities like Paris and Palermo recording scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C.

In Portugal, a staggering 46.6°C was recorded, while over 17 major cities in Italy, including Rome and Milan, have similarly suffered under the oppressive sun.

The toll is severe, more than 2,300 deaths across 12 cities have been linked to heat-related illnesses in just ten days in July 2025.

Approximately 65% of these fatalities are associated directly with climate change.

As cities struggle to cope, the impact on travel is becoming increasingly evident.

“The temperatures are impacting comfort, safety, accessibility, and long-term sustainability,” says Sue Garrett, general manager at Flight Centre South Africa.

This shift in the travel landscape is further supported by a their global survey, revealing that 72% of South Africans intend to travel outside the peak season in 2025, with significant numbers opting for off-season (49%) or shoulder-season (23%) travel to escape extreme temperatures, evade crowds, and save on costs.

With heatwaves now ten times more likely due to human-induced climate change, Europe stands as the fastest-warming continent, heating up at about twice the global average since the 1980s.

As the traditional allure of summer destinations wanes, new “coolcation” spots are emerging.
