The Western Cape has once again cemented its position as a powerhouse in school sports, claiming the top honour as overall winners at the 2025 Winter National School Sport Championships, which wrapped up in Durban earlier this week.

Team Western Cape delivered a standout performance across several codes, walking away with gold medals in both the boys’ and girls’ under-15 rugby tournaments, as well as in netball within the Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) category.

Adding to their impressive medal haul, the province also secured bronze in boys’ and girls’ football, and in netball for deaf learners. Recognising the efforts behind the scenes, the team’s support staff, teachers and parents, were awarded Best Administration.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, praised the athletes and their support teams for their discipline and determination.

“We are incredibly proud of all our athletes who stepped up and who put in hours of training and preparation to ensure they successfully defended their gold title for another year. Every athlete and support staff member showed up, committed to the journey and made the choice to take part and give their best,” said Mackenzie.

The championship drew participation from provinces across the country, showcasing talent in various disciplines and providing a platform for young athletes to shine on a national stage. For the Western Cape, this latest achievement builds on a growing list of accolades in 2025.

Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, also shared his pride in the province’s young sports stars.

“Western Cape school sport is going from strength to strength, adding another title following our win at the SASA Primary Schools Athletics Championships earlier this year. Congratulations to our outstanding young athletes and the staff and parents who supported our future sporting superstars. Watch this space!” he said.

The Winter National School Sport Championships are a key part of the Department of Basic Education’s broader vision to promote physical development, inclusion, and excellence among learners. With this latest victory, the Western Cape continues to demonstrate that investment in youth sport delivers powerful returns on and off the field.
