Tragic shooting claims life of three-month-old boy in Bonteheuwel, just days after 11-year-old girl killed in Wallacedene

Bishop Lavis detectives are hard at work pursuing leads in a bid to apprehend those responsible for the death of a three-month-old boy and the attempted murder of an adult female in Yellowwood Street, Bonteheuwel, on, Friday 22 August 2025.

At around 07:45, two unidentified armed men entered the premises and proceeded to one of the living rooms. One of the men fired a gunshot, leaving the three-month-old baby with serious injuries. 

The infant was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment but was later declared deceased by medical personnel.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the suspects fled the scene and remain at large.

“Police believe the attack may be gang-related. Bishop Lavis police have confirmed they are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.”

Ward Councillor Angus Mckenzie expressed profound grief over the tragedy, describing the incident as “beyond shocking, it is heartwrenching.” He also highlighted the fear within the community that hinders witness cooperation:

“As a community we are shattered. I do understand when  people are saying that the residents should speak and give their statements, because we all know for positive prosecution, the police need witness statements. The reality is who is going to speak when there is no protection for a whistleblower?

“This is why I firmly believe that devolution of policing powers is so crucial. I believe that together, the three spheres, Metro Police, Law Enforcement and SAPS can make a dent in the crime network, when there is enough resources more can be done.

“You constantly read of witnesses being killed, people are afraid, now we have all of this happening, and at the cost of what? At the cost of a precious baby’s life…”

This shooting comes just three days after 11-year-old Esmine Franke was killed by a stray bullet outside her home in Kraaifontein.

Esmine was playing outside with her friend when gunmen opened fire, killing the little girl and injuring her eight-year-old friend in the back. A 19-year-old man was also wounded during the incident in Wallacedene.

Police have recently arrested a man allegedly found in possession of a firearm suspected to be used in the killing of Esmine.
