Cape Town - Police have opened an inquest case following the discovery of the decapitated head of a baby along railway tracks in Brackenfell on Saturday evening.

Titanium Securitas head of operations Kobus Kotze said they received a call from someone who alerted them to a baby's head found next to the railway track near the Everite Bridge.

Kotze said the person was walking on the footpath and made the gruesome discovery next to rubbish strewn along the railway tracks and alerted their armed response team and law enforcement that were in old Paarl.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed by our medical team that it was indeed the head of a baby that was found. Local authorities were on the scene to conduct a full investigation into the matter,” he said.

Police spokesperson sergeant Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

“Brackenfell police opened an inquest case following the discovery of the head of a baby on Saturday evening at about 10.30pm,” said Twigg.

In June the body of a baby was found dumped in a drain in Delft.

The discovery was made by community activists who were doing work outside the drain.
