CAPE TOWN - Nearing 300 days since the disappearance and alleged brutal torture of her son, Charmaine Curtis from Tafelsig in Mitchells Plain said she has hopes that justice will be served as much as she yearns for closure.

Curtis’ son, Vinchernico Theron, who would have celebrated his 21st birthday next month, disappeared without a trace on June 7 last year after he had allegedly been kidnapped after spending the night at a friends place.

Since Theron’s alleged kidnapping and assault, 11 people have been arrested and appeared before the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court.

“(Today) we commemorate nine months since his disappearance and the incident. I have been counting down the days since he disappeared.

“The case will appear again later this week but we are hopeful that we will head to high court soon.

“I just want justice for my child. These are monsters that are parents themselves who did such evil and horrific acts to my child.

“They look into my eyes and have no remorse and I think about my child daily as I see the children of (the accused) walking around freely,” said Curtis.

Theron was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue long sleeve top and white Converse sneakers, and according to information, was last seen along Swartklip Road.

Curtis said since her son disappeared 274 days ago, she has had to process a lot of information including details which were submitted during court proceedings.

“There are so many rumours doing the rounds but what was said was that my son was tortured with boiling water, assaulted with pangas before being dumped at a shack and then from there shoved in a wheelie bin where they were later seen along Swartklip Road.

“I used to be a zombie drinking calming tablets on court days just to remain calm because listening to the details and staring at these monsters has been very traumatic.

“All I want is for them to tell me if my son is still alive, give him to me and if he isn’t just show me where his remains are so we may have closure,” said Curtis.

Theron was to celebrate his 21st birthday next month.

“He looked forward to his 21st and had already started inviting people to it.

“But we will still celebrate it in his honour with the community who has really supported us in a big way and remain hopeful for justice,” said Curtis.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said: “(The) enquiry was sent to Mitchells Plain police station to source the requested information. Once the investigation officer, who in all probability is not on duty today respond to my mail message, this office will comment further on the case.”
