Durban — In a shocking incident, a councillor associated with Team Sugar South Africa (TSSA), allegedly shot and wounded several members of his family in Newcastle during a violent outburst on Friday.

The councillor, known to the Daily News, cannot be named as he has not appeared in court, represents the TSSA in the Amajuba District Municipality.

A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed relief that no fatalities occurred but acknowledged the seriousness of the incident.

“We are dealing with this matter as a family. We are glad that no one died, but it is still a grave matter to us,” they stated, declining to provide further comments on what they termed a “sensitive” issue.

Community leader Thabani Ngcobo said: “We are aware of the incident. It worries us as the community that the people who are supposed to be protecting the community are the ones tormenting them. Councillors should protect communities and not shoot them. However, the police are handling the matter.”

In light of the outrage surrounding the incident, TSSA issued a statement rejecting any association with him, declaring, “Team Sugar South Africa condemns and distances itself in its strongest terms from criminality along with gun violence done by a member who was expelled from the organisation a long time ago.”

Despite TSSA’s claims, the councillor continues to hold his position in the Amajuba District Municipality.

Further, the statement stressed the organisation's commitment to maintaining law and order, urging law enforcement agencies to pursue justice relentlessly.

“We further encourage agencies to leave no stone unturned in making sure that the perpetrator is brought to justice.”

Police were approached for comment, but had not responded by the time of publication.
