Durban — A truck driver and a passenger were killed when the construction truck they were travelling in overturned on the R617 in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Wednesday afternoon.

Underberg Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Kate Bodmann said when paramedics arrived after 3pm, they found a tip lorry on its side blocking most of the roadway.

“On assessment, it was found that the driver and passenger had been ejected from the truck and unfortunately succumbed to their injuries,” Bodmann said.

“Paramedics declared both occupants dead.”

Bodmann said all the necessary services were on scene and the incident would be investigated by the authorities.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident.

“The driver and his passenger sustained injuries on the head and body and were confirmed dead at the scene,” Ngcobo said.

“A case of culpable homicide was opened at Boston police station for investigation. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”
