As Themi Venturas said when he introduced this show, with this kind of comedy you either love it or hate it. That was obvious from where I was sitting between two couples, one sitting stony-faced throughout and the other laughing so hard I thought I wasn't getting all the jokes.
The third instalment of Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden's Neon Anthems series flies under the title the Go! Go! Musical Comedy Show, which is more than appropriate. The show is non-stop energy from beginning to end and the laughs keep coming. Granted, this type of humour isn't for everyone, but it did seem to bridge the generation gap as grey haired-grandpas giggled along with tongue-studded students.
Magner and Van Heerden have been performing together for so long that their interaction on stage is very laid-back but still cohesive. In fact, their relationship is so close that Van Heerden sang a particularly hilarious song in its honour called If I was gay.
Joining these boys on stage for the first time was classical violinist, Victor Samsinov, who did well to hold his own amidst the chaotic couple and bring more class to some of the songs.
While Neon Anthems' music features anything from antelopes to masturbation, the tunes are more than just catchy jingles. Each member contributes to the sound and the music itself is actually very good, if not for a few ridiculous additions from the mixers on stage.
This show has a strong Corné and Twakkie feel with random stage decorations including a Spider-Man lava lamp and a blow-up doll called Agnes. While you get the feeling that it's been done before and that some of the interludes are a little too silly, these boys are so funny that you soon forget all about it.
This show is not for everyone and does have a few risqué moments that some may not appreciate. But if you think it's funny to sing a song about how rats have a bad rep while a man in a bunny costume plays a shaker on stage, then this is the show for you.
