The HollywoodBets Durban July is South Africa’s premier and iconic horse racing event held annually in July. It is where the thrill of style, high fashion and sports all meet.

From dapper suits to stunning dresses and hats, the event is the ultimate celebration of style and sophistication.

With the event nearing, we spoke to some fashion experts and asked them to share a few tips on all things Durban July fashion.

The theme for this year is ‘’Ride the Wave’’.

Lara Klawikowski, a South African fashion designer, has urged people to use local designers.

“’Wear something by a South African designer. It’s the greatest horse racing event in Africa and I’d love to see South Africans wearing and supporting the best of South African fashion at the event,” said Klawikowski.

Lara’s fashion tips on the theme

– Wear something that mimics the textures and colour palettes of the magnificent Durban beaches and sunsets in an elegant and striking way would be ideal.

– Your outfit should be a balance between classic and dramatic. Aim for Vogue editorial.

– An inspiring fascinator is imperative and can turn the simplest outfit into a Durban July winner.

IOL also reached out to Balini Naidoo, a Saldanha Bay based fashion designer, who shares some of her insights on fashion for the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

‘’Ultimately, both men and women should focus on pieces that resonate with their style while embracing the ‘Ride the Wave’ theme.

“Fashion at the races is all about making a memorable statement with confidence and flair,” said Balini.

– A sharp race-day look should embrace the essence of the ocean with elegant touches of blue.

– Tailored suits paired with crisp white shirts to emulate the sea’s tranquillity, adding accessories like a pocket square or tie with wave patterns.

– Don’t shy away from a bit of shimmer or metallic accents to mimic the ocean’s sparkle under the sun.

Balini’s tips for women at the July

– Envision the powerful ocean with hues of blue and a mermaid inspiration, adding glitz and glam to suit such a prestigious event.

– Don't forget to draw inspiration from the bright colours of beach towels, incorporating playful , bold patterns and vibrant hues.

– Unique headpieces that echo ocean elements such as shell, pearls, or wave motifs, can add the perfect finishing touch, creating an ethereal and enchanting look.

Finally, IOL also spoke with Vanya Mangaliso of Sungoddess, who will also be one of the judge panellists on the day.

Mangaliso advises attendees to not play it safe and to take it as an opportunity to go way out of their comfort zone, be daring in their styling choices all in the name of fun. The more cutting-edge, the better.

‘’If you look at the theme ‘Ride the Wave’, it inspires one to let go and let loose.q

“It’s really an exciting time when you think of how fashion and horse racing have delighted audiences for centuries,” said Vanya.

The event takes place at the Greyville Racecourse on July 6, we will be looking forward to seeing out of the box thinking and some pushed fashion boundaries this year.
