The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in KwaZulu-Natal has obtained a Preservation of Property Order from the Durban High Court, for a motor vehicle belonging to Cebo Mhlongo, an alleged construction mafia member.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Mhlongo and three others, Mzuliswa Khosalityeli, Sibusiso Victor Ncube, and Oyama Ozingwa, were facing charges of extortion, intimidation, and attempted murder.

"The case relates to an incident that occurred in September 2024, where Mhlongo and his co-accused, claiming to be members of a business forum, allegedly went to a construction site in the Clare Estate area demanding to see management regarding payment," said NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara- Ramkisson.

"An altercation ensued between them and a security company, resulting in the men being injured. They were subsequently arrested and charged."

Explaining the AFU preservation order, Ramkisson-Kara said the motor vehicle, valued at approximately R80,000, was seized on the basis that it was instrumental in the commission of the offence.

"The vehicle will remain in the custody of the curator pending a forfeiture application."

The NPA said this Section 38 Preservation Order was successfully obtained by Senior State Advocate Beverley Mothilall.

Mhlongo and his co-accused will return to the Durban Regional Court for their criminal case in February.
