It will come as no surprise if Padel’s power sisters move up in rankings in the new year, given their recent dominance on the court.
Lena Lisa Bester and Terina Coetzee continued to shine in one of the fastest-growing sports scenes after winning the last Padel4Good ladies tournament of the year after beating Karen van Huyssteen and Michelle Van Der Merwe in the final at the Virgin Active Padel Centre this past weekend.
Despite Van Huyssteen and Van Der Merwe being highly respectable players within the Padel fraternity, the sisters were simply too strong for their opponents on the day. They outworked their rivals with great shot selection and speed across the court to secure a 4-0 win.
It was an extra special day for Bester and Coetzee.
“This is the first time we won this tournament together, so it’s really special for us. We hate playing against each other,” said Bester.
“My sister is my favorite partner. We understand each other well and communicate well. We have decided not to play against each other any longer. It's really not fun at all.”
While the sisters may not have won this specific event before, they have earned the top spot with other partners. At one point, they even competed against each other in the final, with Bester and her partner Genevieve Korsten walking away victorious earlier this year.
Outside of the sporting charity event, the sisters tag-teamed in many tournaments, winning events including the Cape Town Tens tournament and the Sixes Festival, and their latest title is likely to shift them higher up on the PlayTomic rankings.
“We hope to go up,” said Coetzee, who is rated between 1.5 and 3.5.
While their competitive side enjoys the acknowledgment regarding rankings, Bester is just happy the sisters can work on their games and play “lekka Padel”.
“To us, it’s also about playing good Padel and improving yourself, we also want to have fun.”
Padel4Good will return early next year with new things in store. Stay tuned to their Instagram accounts for more information.
