Award-winning actor and author Florence Masebe poses pertinent questions in our Dispatches, where she asks: “When will we move past the ‘celebrating women’ gimmicks and capture stories on women, not only Struggle heroines but also musicians, journalists, artists, nurses and teachers who had a huge role to play in shaping the type of women we all have become?”
This being Women’s Month, it is up to us women to ensure that our narrative is captured and told the way it happened, not through someone else’s eyes, and to be able to write down our history. We need resources for research, writing and editing the volumes of rich material that will come from such a venture.
Only then will generations to come realise that wherever they stand it will be on the big shoulders of stalwarts such as Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams, Helen Joseph and Lilian Ngoyi.
