Johannesburg - Residents of the West Rand areas have been warned of an increase in the number of opportunistic crimes over the last few weeks.

Fidelity ADT says that over the last few weeks there has been a definite increase in the number of opportunistic crimes in the area, including but not limited to trailer theft, theft of beams, theft of gate motors and hijackings. The spike has been notable in Little Falls, Strubens Valley, Krugersdorp, Roodekrans, Randpark Ridge and Weltevreden Park.

Fanie Loots, Fidelity ADT branch Manager said much of the crime seems opportunistic.

“We are seeing an increase in trailer theft, particularly in the Krugersdorp area, the guys are in and out very quickly. There is also a worrying trend of hijackings at petrol stations while motorists are refuelling. This week there were three incidents, one in Roodekrans, one in Randpark Ridge and a third in Weltevreden park,” he said.

Loots said it was critical for residents to remain alert and vigilant at all times.

“We are living in a tough economy and crime is definitely on the increase. Fidelity ADT has increased visibility in the area but we are urging residents to be vigilant,” said Loots.
