Cape Town Opera has invited young, talented singers from the Cape Metro to join the upcoming auditions for its Children’s Chorus and Foundation Studio.
The Children’s Chorus is looking for singers between 9 to 15 years, to audition. This project-based chorus rehearses only a few weeks prior to each production or concert, making it an ideal opportunity for young talent to experience the thrill of performing without a year-round commitment.
Parents of talented young singers are urged to sign up before the closing date on August 23. It would be beneficial if applicants have at least one year of choral experience, but stage experience is not required.
Singers may audition with one or two contrasting arias or songs, with or without accompaniment.
Applicants must bring two copies of their sheet music for the selection panel and the accompanist, and will receive a scheduled audition date and time. No walkins will be accepted.
Auditions take place at the Artscape Theatre Centre on August 29 at 3pm.
The Cape Town Opera Youth Development and Education department also announced audition calls specifically for high school learners of all voice types from grades eight to 10, to audition.
This programme aims to prepare students for tertiary education in opera and classical singing by enhancing their singing and music theory skills.
The Foundation Studio provides music literacy courses that may not be presented at their schools and are particularly aimed at students from disadvantaged communities.
The programme offers weekly vocal and theory lessons, keyboard studies, and aural training. Interested applicants can find the finer details on the Cape Town Opera website.
Head of Youth Development and Education at Cape Town Opera, Madré Loubser said, “We are excited to open auditions for the Cape Town Opera Children’s Chorus and Foundation Studio. These two programmes provide invaluable opportunities for young singers to develop their talents and gain exposure to the world of opera.
“We are particularly committed to supporting learners through our Foundation Studio, which aims to give high school learners access to music literacy courses that their schools cannot offer.
The primary goal of the Foundation Studio is to ensure that learners have the necessary skills to enter tertiary education institutions.”
