In an inspiring testament to talent and hard work, five outstanding students from Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music have earned coveted spots in the Africa United Youth Orchestra.
This ensemble will perform at the illustrious Carnegie Hall next Saturday, celebrating youth musicianship from across the African continent.
The selected musicians include Gilah Kellner as concertmaster, Catherine Stiff as associate concertmaster, along with violinists Gretna Heynike, Carina Naudé and Ricardo Hiniker.
Their selection marks a notable milestone not only in their personal careers but also underscores Stellenbosch University’s dedication to nurturing world-class musical talent.
The selection process was highly competitive, drawing more than 200 applicants from various African nations including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This level of interest highlights both the talent pool available and the esteemed reputation of Stellenbosch University’s music programme.
Dr Suzanne Martens, senior lecturer in violin and chamber music at the university, praised her students’ achievements.
“Their inclusion in this prestigious ensemble underlines our dedication to excellence in music education and highlights our success in nurturing world-class talent.”
Organised by the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra, the AUYO is set to make its North American debut during Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW), a summer festival known for showcasing exceptional youth orchestras globally.
The orchestra will be conducted by acclaimed American conductor William Eddins.
Before their highly anticipated performance at Carnegie Hall, the AUYO will hold its inaugural concert tomorrow at the ZK Matthews Hall in Pretoria.
This concert will feature works by renowned South African composers including Michael Mosoeu Moerane and Bongani Ndodana-Breen – an opportunity to celebrate local musical heritage ahead of their international debut.
As these talented young musicians prepare for an event that promises to honour cultural collaboration through music, they exemplify South Africa’s rich artistic tradition on a global stage.
The upcoming performances are sure to be memorable occasions that highlight not only individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of unity within the African continent’s diverse musical landscape.
