Bishop Lavis Police are investigating a murder case after a 24-year-old man was shot dead near the railway line in Alsweg, Bonteheuwel, yesterday
Police spokesman Wesley Twigg said the medical service team declared the victim dead on the scene. He was shot in the head and no arrests have been made yet.
“The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” Twigg said.
Councillor for ward 50, Angus McKenzie, said they suspected that it might be a gang-related murder case. “It is an isolated incident. We have never heard of a shooting incident in that section of Bonteheuwel. We are working closely with that community to provide us with as much information as possible,” he said.
McKenzie said gang-related incidents usually increase during the festive season in Bonteheuwel as people who have money fall prey to gangsters.
More than 50 community volunteers in the Neighbourhood Watch have received equipment to continue make night-time patrols in Bonteheuwel.
McKenzie said he would ensure that all unsafe areas in Bonteheuwel were identified and that more volunteers would be placed in those areas to ensure safety, as part of the festive season safety plan.
