Cape Town - Two men are behind bars after they were caught red-handed with firearms by the Anti-gang unit.

Police were carrying out crime prevention operations in Hanover Park on Monday when they made the arrests.

Police spokesperson Captain Lance Goliath said the team of police officers had noticed the suspicious vehicle, and when the suspect saw them, he attempted to flee the scene.

They managed to arrest the suspect in a matter of minutes, who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition, which he had hidden away.

They also discovered that the firearm had, in fact, been stolen.

“Increased visibility and intensified crime prevention operations in order to eradicate crimes are at the order of the day in Philippi Police precinct.

“At 8.30pm, members of the police’s Anti-Gang Unit were busy with crime prevention operations at Ryburg Road Hanover Park.”

“The members spotted a male who started running when he, in turn, saw the members.

“The members gave chase and caught up with the 37-year-old male suspect as he was busy pitching a 9mm pistol with a magazine and live ammunition inside a white car which was stationary in the road.

“Police arrested the 37-year-old male suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as he could not produce any documentation or licence to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

“The serial number of the firearm was still intact. Further inquiries into the details of the firearm brought to light that it was, in fact, reported as stolen at SAPS Lingelethu-West earlier this year.

“Once charged, the suspect will make his appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.”

In a separate incident, Goliath said they managed to arrest a suspect who had been keeping a firearm inside a wooden structure in Surburg Walk.

The 34-year-old suspect is also due to appear in court this week.

“The Gang Unit members arrested the suspect for the illegal possession of various calibre ammunition,” Goliath explained.

Philippi Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Colin Nathan commended the members involved in the arrests.

“Police will continue clamping down on criminals and their criminal activities, thus creating a safer crime-free environment for everyone,” he said.
