Retail giant Walmart is set to open its first branded stores in South Africa this year, promising low prices, local products, and job opportunities as it expands further into the African market.

This move follows Walmart’s first Growth Summit, held in April, which featured suppliers from 12 African countries showcasing locally made, grown, or assembled products. The event led to the recruitment of several small and medium-sized Africa-based suppliers.

Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO, said, "Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology. Walmart will also offer a variety of locally sourced products".

"By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture".

She added that customers can expect a pleasant in-store experience, with bright, well-designed spaces, wide aisles, and friendly service, offering everything from affordable groceries to global household and entertainment brands.

The first stores are expected to open before the end of 2025, with specific locations and launch dates set to be announced in October.

"The company will share further details about store locations, hiring, and community initiatives in the coming months. Customers can also look forward to digital capabilities to enhance their shopping journey".

The company has also committed to investing in the local workforce and communities through initiatives focused on food security, disaster relief, small business support, and sustainability.

“Every rand matters when it comes to price. It is this balance and mindset on quality and Every Day Low Prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust.

"We’re committed to providing an exceptional in-store experience at every customer touchpoint, from a warm welcome upon entering the store, to helpful assistance in the aisles and friendly, efficient checkout,” Massmart president and CEO Miles van Rensburg said.
