Mignon Pretorius, a promising figure in the retail landscape, has recently shot to fame after being awarded the prestigious SPAR Eastern Cape’s 2025 Young Achiever Award.

The recognition highlighted her remarkable contributions to her family’s SUPERSPAR store in Jeffreys Bay, where she has successfully merged innovative design with a focus on quality products.

At just 29, Pretorius embodies a forward-thinking approach to retail, grounded in her background as a visual communications graduate.

The award reflects her ability to adapt and evolve in an ever-changing market.

“You are never really sure in retail. Sometimes it feels like you're playing in the dark but hitting the right spots,” she said.

Her commitment to continuous improvement ensures she doesn’t shy away from experimenting with new ideas.

Last year, Pretorius directed a major redesign of their expansive store, strategically located in the heart of South Africa’s surfing mecca.

This isn't just a business for her; it's a family legacy.

The store has been a staple for nearly 30 years and has been overseen by her family for 22 of those, making her connection to its operations both personal and profound. The learning process began early, from cutting ham in the deli to breaking eggs for the bakery during school holidays.

Under her leadership, the store has evolved into a destination for specialty products whilst ensuring it caters to a diverse clientele from various LSM spectrums.

“It’s a tricky balance,” she said, but her innate understanding of retail dynamics, honed through hands-on experience, allows her to meet the needs of customers effectively.

One of her standout attributes is her willingness to take risks.

She openly acknowledged her past mistakes, viewing them as stepping stones to success.

Her adventurous spirit was further fuelled by her participation in SPAR’s Management Growth Programme, which provided her the opportunity to explore and learn from retailers across the country.

“It pushed me to change how I think about things,” Pretorius explained, illustrating her commitment to personal and professional development.

The recent upgrades have bolstered her ambition to possibly compete for the store-of-the-year title in the future, yet she remains grounded, acknowledging the work that lies ahead.

“I’m not sure we are there yet. To get there, we will need people such as myself to visit other stores to see what they do. What works best for us may not work for everyone else, and I still have a bit of work to do,” she stated with a blend of humility and determination.

Though she may undervalue her accomplishments, those close to her understand the significant impact she has already made. Mignon Pretorius is not just a young achiever; she is a trailblazer redefining the retail experience in her community, one innovative idea at a time.
