Gilda Narsimdas, a 43-year-old public relations manager and business owner, has carved a unique niche for herself in the travel and podcasting industries.

As the owner of Entourage Media, a PR agency, and co-owner of Neon Pineapple, an influencer agency, Narsimdas has successfully navigated the complexities of media and communication.

Her journey is not just about professional success; it is also a testament to her passion for travel and culture.

A passion for travel and storytelling

Narsimdas's love for travel began early in her career as a journalist.

"I worked as an entertainment editor for several years and travelled quite a bit locally and internationally for work," she recalls.

"Needless to say, travel is addictive."

This addiction to exploration led her to start the Curated Wander podcast, where she engages with avid travellers who share their stories, tips, and tricks about travelling, whether local or international.

"I wanted my podcast to be more than just a straightforward travelogue," Narsimdas explains.

"I want stories, anecdotes, and culture-sharing. I want people to feel something and learn something from those discussions."

This approach has resonated with her audience, making the podcast a platform for cultural exchange and inspiration.

Proud moments and creative risks

When asked about her proudest achievements, Narsimdas highlights the launch of her podcast.

"It’s taken me a while to commit, but I love it and see it as something I can do for as long as I can," she shares.

Her work in public relations has also been a source of pride, with successful campaigns for major brands like Disney, MTN and KFC.

"All the campaigns I’ve been part of over the past 10 years have been successful," she adds, reflecting on her journey.

However, her path has not been without risks.

"When I started my PR business, I took a huge risk by leaving the world of magazines and moving to public relations without any working knowledge of it," Narsimdas admits.

"Then, co-founding an influencer agency was the same thing. I didn’t have a marketing degree, but I had an understanding of the industry."

Her willingness to embrace uncertainty has paid off, as she has built a successful career in a competitive field.

A love for South Africa

Narsimdas's roots are deeply embedded in South Africa, where she was born and raised in Durban.

After spending nearly 20 years in Johannesburg, she has developed a profound appreciation for her country.

"I love our country – we have unbelievable beauty everywhere and our people are just incredible," she states.

"I implore people who visit from other countries to stop in Durban and experience the culture, especially the food."

She believes that Durban often gets overlooked in favour of more popular destinations like Cape Town.

"Cape Town gets all the international love for the mountain and easy living, while Johannesburg is a historical stop," Narsimdas explains.

"But Durban has so much to offer, from the hills and valleys in the Midlands to the ocean along the coast."

Inspirations and role models

In the competitive world of media communications and marketing, Narsimdas finds inspiration in strong, successful women.

"When I worked in magazines, I looked up to PR mavens like Melanie Ramjee and Farah Fortune," she shares.

"Today, I work alongside incredible individuals like Jenny Griesel and Desh Govender, who continue to climb in the world of marketing."

Their contributions motivate her to push boundaries and strive for excellence in her work.

Looking ahead

As Narsimdas looks to the future, she is excited about the projects on her horizon.

"I will round off the year with the rest of season 1 of my podcast - I have some great guests lined up," she reveals.

Additionally, she has two significant PR campaigns coming up in the coming months.

Words of wisdom for aspiring travel enthusiasts

For those looking to enter the travel industry, Narsimdas offers valuable advice.

"If you are truly passionate about working in travel and hungry for culture, learn as much as you can about it," she suggests.

"Research your options and consider short courses. You’d be surprised at the many opportunities available."

Her enthusiasm for travel is infectious, as she believes it opens one's eyes to the world in ways nothing else can.

A glimpse into her personal life

Outside of her professional pursuits, Narsimdas is a devoted mother of two girls, aged 4 and 12.

"On weekends, I like to relax as much as I can, spending time with family," she shares.

"We enjoy entertaining at home, but my girls love hotel living and being out and about."

This balance between family life and her career reflects her commitment to both her personal and professional aspirations.
